My doula journey...

When I was pregnant with our eldest daughter, Sita Rose, we were living in India and we met a wonderful friend from Canada who was a doula. She guided and educated us so much during that time about empowering birth, the beauty of breastfeeding, and the importance of a restful and nourishing 'babymoon' (postpartum).

Through both of my pregnancies I have learnt so much about the strength of women, and how we are even stronger when we have the support and love of our partners and close network around us.

I am saddened every day hearing stories of women being stripped of their power and feeling pressure and bullying for their choices of how, where, when and with whom they wish to birth with.

This has to change.

In recent years doulas have become a bit of a buzz word, and I know some people ask what's the point, or that they never had them 'in their day'.

But they did.

They had midwives who could visit them at home for every one of their antenatal appointments and sit with them listening to their worries and lives.

They had their grandmothers and mothers and cousins and sisters all living close by ready to care, support, teach breastfeeding and look after the woman's other children whilst she recovered from giving birth.

Doulas are the grandmothers, mothers, sisters, cousins for all women.

We carry this pledge to hold space for women through the ages. And as medicalised birth becomes the increasing norm, the wisdom that we carry as "birth keepers" is even more important than ever.

I love this path that I am journeying down. I am humbled every time a woman chooses me to be with her during this chapter of her life.

I am always here to remind women of their power.

"Pregnant and birthing mothers are elemental forces,
in the same sense that gravity, thunderstorms, earthquakes,

and hurricanes are elemental forces.
In order to understand the laws of their energy flow,
you have to love and respect them for their magnificence

at the same time that you study them

with the accuracy of a true scientist."
